lol If some of you guys have noticed, I've recently taken a break from the Starter Kit. This is not because I'm quitting, it's just because of school. I'll be going to college next year, so you know how it is with the applications, and also I'm taking college level courses in order to get my Associates Degree so things are not as easy for me, but I'm hanging in there. I've always been thinking about this project during my long break, with a lot of thoughts on how to improve it.
The first way I'm going to improve it is memory wise. I'm taking a computer science course in school so that has helped me learn a few tricks up my sleeves. Pokemon games of course will have a lot of memory usage, but this problem is made bigger due to the sheer fact that the engine is made in GameMaker which makes all variables as doubles. For those who don't know, doubles are 15 digit long integers with decimal points, the type of variable that uses the most memory. In traditional languages, you can choose how long you want the digits to be, which is one reason why C++ is faster than GameMaker. I have methods to make use of GameMaker's ways and combine multiple variables into one large variable.
Now aside from this boring mumbo-jumbo that I just said, I have questions for those who would want to use my Kit:
1. Would you mind if I put all of the sprites and music in just the main file? The pros is that there is one file and everyone sees the sprites and music with no errors. The cons is that it's a larger file size.
2. Should I add memory encryption to the variables? The pros is that it will be harder for the novice hacker to hack using Cheat Engine and other hacking programs and so when I add online support, it might save a few people's ass. The cons is that the game might run a little slower and it will be a lot harder for me to manage.
3. Should I make a Pokemon Game Making program that generates a GameMaker file for you? The pros is the simplicity. The cons is that it will only work with the newest GameMaker (8.1), which I absolutely despise and it will take a little longer for me to maintain. I will probably need another programmer to help me. Any chance any of you know OpenGL or DirectX?
4. What should I do with my tiles? Face it, they look terrible. Can anyone help me make new ones and/or find new ones?
Based on response I think I will be redoing the engine for better simplicity with more comments and such. This will make it easier for people to learn from my code. Also remaking it will give me the ability to add things I missed before.
